"Healthy Ice-cream" for the people on the internet? Or no?

Halo Top, since its introduction has changed the definition of ice cream. They introduced their version of ice creams which are apparently healthy, and as they call it, “ice-cream for adults”. To understand how people all over the world thought about this, we do a little something called “social listening”.

First, let’s go through the number of mentions that Halo Top has had in the last 2 years.

We can see two peaks of around 800 mentions in December 2019 and then in May 2020. When going through why Halo Top was mentioned so much in December 2019, we can see that:

It can be seen that almost everyone was mentioning diets and healthy lifestyle. And surprisingly, Halo Top actually has added protein in their ice creams and has less fat and is arguably more healthy than other ice creams. In fact, their slogans even give people more reasons to finish the whole pint of ice creams in one sitting rather than having just a bit for dessert. Halo top actually managed to get peoples attention in niche of healthy ice creams and in total was able to 2 million people according to digimind. Ice cream, being as seasonal as it is, is bound to have upward and downward trends on social media and Halo Top is no exception as it follows suit.

To explain the upward trend in May 2020, this was exactly when Halo Top revealed their new flavours for their Halo Top Pops series, and these were exactly what this niche market needed. These Top Pops averaged just 110 calories per pop and even had 6g of protein in them.


To make it even more exciting, these could be bought in boxes of five for just $5.99. Creating this whole new segment within the ice cream market has been very beneficial for Halo Top as in 2017, they were the most selling brand of ice creams in the USA. The sentiment among the internet for them has also been very positive with 61% of mentions being positive and 35% being neutral. It can also be seen that most of it’s mentions have come from men.


To conclude, I think that Halo Top being in this market has really changed things as many manufacturers have come up with their own type of healthy ice creams and Halo Top are still going strong. Their social presence is also really strong with most of their audience also being on their side. If this is how they intend to carry this forward, I might start living a healthy lifestyle as well; Yes, I do mean having a pint of Halo Top every day.
